Duruthu full moon Poya day

According to Buddhist philosophy, it was on a day like today that Lord Bhudda first visited Sri Lanka, with his visit to Mahiyanganaya during the eighth month after attaining enlightenment, foreseeing dissension between two factions the island.

 

The most remarkable event that took at the visit of the Buddha was the presence of the god Sumana Saman, the guardian god of Sri Pada who attained the state of Sothappanna after listening to the preachings of Lord Buddha.

In accordance with the ancient chronicles, the Buddha had handed over, the god Sumana Samana a hair relic when he begged Thathgatha to give something to worship on his first visit to the island.

Various religious practices will take place in several Viharas and temples across the island today, in line with Duruthu full moon Poya day.
