Another committee is to be appointed to probe Sinharaja

Another committee is to be appointed to probe the controversial construction of a road through the Sinharaja rain forest.

Officials of the Forest Conservation Department, Land Reforms Commission, Central Environment Authority, the Divisional Secretariat and the Pradeshiya Sabha are to be included in the committee which has been suggested by the committee already probing the issue.

Authorities have said that suspended work has been suspended.

The construction work on the road bisecting Sinharaja forest, which is a World Heritage Site, had to be suspended when environmental activists and forest conservation officials protested against the project and UNESCO called for a report from the environment ministry.

Environmentalists complain that the construction work had been done without even an environment evaluation report and say the act will cause serious damage to the bio-diversity in Sinharaja forest.
