The van was traveling between two towns in the restive Federally Administered Tribal Areas of northwestern Pakistan when it hit the device, said Zakir Hussain, the commissioner of Kohat Division.
Militant attacks are frequent in the Tribal Areas, which lie along the border with Afghanistan.
Three women and three children were among the dead in the blast caused by a device using an anti-tank mine, Hussain said. It wounded two children -- a boy and a girl -- both ages 11, he added.
No group has claimed responsibility for the explosion.
